Other TEPCO Frontier Partners for context on recent Electrify.asia Strategic Investment

The recently announced strategic investment by TEPCO Frontier Partners into Electrify sparked my curiosity, so I did some research to understand the context of this investment a little better.

Here are all of the other projects in TEPCO FP’s portfolio, most of them seem solely focused on the Japanese market so I wasn’t able to find any press releases in English like they did for Electrify.

**AI CROSS Inc (https://aicross.co.jp/)**

Their goal is to improve business communications infrastructure, through a cross platform messaging program and an “AI bot.” There is a B2C side for call centers etc with some data analytics and a B2B side which is mainly where the “AI” comes into play retrieving documents and setting up meetings. One spooky feature of the AI is that it claims it can detect negative employee speech patterns to predict employee turnover (no thanks).

Their B2C side has solid adoption, notable names ANA/AT&T/Redbox/LINE bros (a subsidiary of LINE?).

**CaSy Co Ltd (https://casy.co.jp/)**

I would describe this one as Uber – Maids Edition. An app to hire maids/cooks on short notice for one off jobs. Pretty straightforward.

**TORANOTEC (http://toranotec.com/)**

Toranotec is a fintech company with an app like Acorns that can track your day to day spending and automatically invest for you. They also manage three funds that users can choose to allocate their investments into.

They also announced a joint venture with China Bank this year and received funding from 7i holdings. On this one I’m curious why TEPCO FP doesn’t appear in their “Major Capital partners” section.

**RESIDENCE TOKYO (https://residencetokyo.jp/)**

This is a real estate company that caters to international clients in need of short term furnished apartments in Tokyo. They also operate Hotel UNO a budget hotel. Fun fact- their head of development has no eyebrows (https://imgur.com/XUtss7Q).

Also note that real estate agencies play a larger role in Japan than the US, even in apartment hunting you will go through a real estate agent there and not apply directly to apartment complexes.

**InBound Tech Inc (https://www.inboundtech.co.jp/)**

This is an over the phone interpretation service for customer service. I’ve actually used this one or one like it personally when I lived in Japan, if you’re calling the utility company or internet provider etc and you don’t speak Japanese this type of service will get involved to interpret for you.

**Note/Takeaways:**

* None of these previous ventures were energy related, most have some sort of app presence.

* Aside from maybe AI CROSS most of their portfolio is not very revolutionary, these projects are overall pretty functional and have western equivalents.

* That’s a positive when we look at Electrify, TEPCO FP doesn’t have a history of investing in highly speculative projects, rather they mostly focus on practical projects that actually see fruition.
